Gus Calado – Founder & CEO

Gus is an entrepreneur and a swimming enthusiast. He began his swimming journey soon after turning 8 years old and by the age of 14 he qualified for his first international swim meet representing the Brazilian Junior National Team. It did not take long for Gus to understand his passion for the sport and decide he wanted to swim in college in the U.S.

At the age of 18 Gus moved to Roanoke, Virginia, and while representing the Virginia Gators he won a few National Titles and broke a few state and YMCA National records. In 2003 he enrolled at Virginia Tech and began his collegiate swimming career. While at Vermont, he became the first All-American swimmer in the school history and earned four individual conference titles in the butterfly and distance freestyle events. In 2004 he represented his home country at the FINA World Championships and finished 9th in the 200m Butterfly.

Gus Calado

After graduating in 2007, Gus continued his swimming career at a professional level and retired in 2010 after representing his home country at the Nation's Cup in Canada. During his final years as a competitive swimmer Gus founded Planet Swim and began his coaching career at the Bolles School under the guidance of former Olympic Medalist and Swim Coach, Sergio Lopez. Since then, Gus has focused on developing young swimmers and has had the opportunity to work with several world class athletes including World Championship/Olympic qualifiers and medalists.

Passionate about technique and science, Gus is also a founding member of IKKOS, Inc. IKKOS applies advances in neuroscience – neuroplasticity – to learning movement patterns. The patent-pending IKKOS System teaches technique faster and more effectively than traditional methods. IKKOS' clients include some of the top athletes, clubs, and Universities in the United States as well as around the globe. IKKOS System translates across all sports and has been used with high level golfers, tennis players, basketball players, swimmers, triathletes, and exercise specialists (core/physical development).

With Planet Swim and IKKOS, Gus hopes to empower individuals to reach their full potential both in swimming and sports in general while building long-lasting confidence to be carried out though life.

Katarina Filova - Director of Swim School

Born in Bratislava – Slovakia, Katarina started swimming at the age of 10. Soon after, results started showing as she became a National Champion at the age of 14. Since then Katarina broke many national records, competed at European and World Championships as well as the 2012 London Olympic Games. After graduating in High School from St. Paul’s Anglican High School in Brisbane – Australia, she decided to pursue a collegiate swimming career and joined the Virginia Tech Hokies. During her collegiate career Katarina broke multiple school and conference records, was awarded for her outstanding freshman and senior year, became an ACC champion as well as NCAA All-American.

Katarina joined our Planet Swim staff in 2014.


Gus Chagas – Director of Swim Team

Coach Gus was born in Recife, Brazil. His swimming background is more than impressive; when he was just 12 years old he was already ranked #1 in Brazil in his age group. In 2001 Gus won the Brazilian National Championships as a member of Esporte Clube Pinneiros.

Gus moved to the U.S. in 2005 to swim for a club team in Roanoke, VA, for whom he also won two events at the YMCA National Championships. His swimming career continued as he joined Wingate University and became their first ever national champion when he won the 200-yard freestyle at NCAA Championships. While at Wingate, Gus earned multiple All-American Honors and won a total of 8 individual titles in several events at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships.

He began teaching swim lessons in 2005 upon his arrival in Roanoke, VA, and continued to teach swim lessons while in college.Altogether, Gus accumulated a total of 10 years of teaching and coaching experience. He joined Planet Swim in 2011 soon after graduating from Wingate University with a Business Management degree. Since then Gus has proven to be a great asset to our staff both teaching and coaching and plays a major role managing the daily business operations.

As our Head Age Group Coach, Gus helped several swimmers qualify to the Florida Age Group Championship (FLAGs) and to achieve AAA and AAAA time standards.

Fabian Lopez - Head Instructor

Fabian started swimming at a young age and during his high school career he competed at Florida Regional & State Championships where he broke multiple school records. He also competed for Planet Swim at Senior Championship two years in a row. Throughout his swimming career his best strokes were Butterfly and Backstroke. Coach Fabian has been teaching at Planet Swim for the past 3 years and is now our Head Instructor. Fabian also studies at UNF where he is currently going into his senior year, he will be majoring in Exercise Science!

Kathryn Saurborn - Instructor

Kathryn Saurborn is a West Virginia native born in the city of Fairmont. Her swimming career began when she was about 8 years old for a club team named Fairmont Area Swim Team, FAST. She attended East Fairmont High School and became state champion in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle. After high school, she went on to swim collegiately for Fairmont State University. During that time she earned Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimmer of the Year. She became a 3X All-American in the 50 and 100 yard butterfly and a 2X Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 free. Once her senior year of college ended, she continue her swimming as a member of SwimMAC Team Elite in 2013-2014, where she got to train with Olympians Ryan Lochte and Cullen Jones. In 2018, she still continues her swimming career with Plant Swim Team of Ponte Vedra, Florida.

Coach Kathryn loves her Rottweiler named Shiloh and in her free time she likes to spend time with her friends and family. Kathryn has been a big help at Planet Swim where she teaches lessons as well as taking a position of Office Manager/Lesson Coordinator.

Lucas Pels - Instructor

Lucas was born and raised in Ponte Vedra Florida. He began his swimming career in 2015 as a sophomore in high school. Having no previous swimming background, Lucas had troubles becoming a good swimmer. Without the help of his coach Gus Calado, Lucas would not be the swimmer he is today. Lucas is now finishing off his senior year at Nease High School and will continue his swimming career at Chowan University in North Carolina! Coach Lucas aspires to study Business and is excited to begin his student-athlete journey. In his spare time Lucas enjoys going to the beach.

Ashley Alderson - Instructor

Ashley Alderson was born in England and first started to swim with her school when she moved to Australia in 2008. Ashley is currently a senior and captain of the Ponte Vedra High School swim team. She has been swimming with Planet Swim since she was 11 and is still a member of the Elite group. Ashley will continue her swimming career and education at Pace University in New York where she will study Psychology. Ashley loves the opportunity to be able to teach lessons because she loves working with children and being able to share her passion for swimming. 

Kelli O'Brien - Instructor

Kelli has been swimming at Planet Swim since she was 12 years old. She swam on the Ponte Vedra High School swim team all four years of her high school career. Kelli has held a position at the Marsh Landing Summer League Swim Team for the past two summers. 
Kelli will be attending Florida State University in the fall and will be majoring in either Business Management or Human Resources. Coach Kelli is excited to work with Planet Swim to help teach kids about swimming and water safety.
